2004.02.21 - PEGC Update ======================== If this wasn't all so deadly serious I would just be laughing my ass off at this point. It's real simple folks: they can't make a deal because the Bush prison camp operation at Guantanamo Bay is CRIMINAL, the Blair government knows it's criminal, and since they're already up to their necks in hot water, they'd really, really prefer not to make it any more obvious that they are aiding and abetting the crimes. The Howard government in Australia has exactly the same problem. Meanwhile the perps at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. are watching their poll numbers sink into the toilet, US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald is zeroing in his Grand Jury on CEO Cheney's marketing operation, the prosecutors in the dreary little JTF-GTMO "espionage" fiasco still haven't figured out how to manufacture something that might actually resemble a case, and God Willing, the whole ugly mess is about to come fully unravelled in the Supreme Court just in time for the Conventions. I figure at this rate, the press might even actually get around to reporting the fact that they've been committing WAR CRIMES UNDER 18 USC 2441 FOR OVER TWO YEARS now, not that I'm holding my breath or anything. 1) BRITISH POWs The Observer (UK) -- February 22, 2004 TO HELL - AND BACK By Martin Bright, Gaby Hinsliff, Anushka Asthana and Paul Harris in New York http://politics.guardian.co.uk/foreignaffairs/story/0,11538,1153662,00.html February 22, 2004 Comment: THE ABUSE GOES ON By Clive Stafford-Smith http://observer.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,6903,1153376,00.html The Guardian (UK)-- February 21, 2004 MINISTER ASKS FOR PATIENCE IN TALKS TO FREE REMAINING FOUR By Patrick Wintour, Clare Dyer and Tania Branigan http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1152839,00.html February 21, 2004 GUANTANAMO SUSPECTS: INTERNATIONAL INJUSTICE Leader http://www.guardian.co.uk/leaders/story/0,3604,1152843,00.html February 21, 2004 Comment: RELEASE OUR PRISONERS By Louise Christian http://politics.guardian.co.uk/foreignaffairs/comment/0,11538,1153053,00.html Guardian / Observer Foreign Affairs Coverage - See: Guantanamo Britons freed http://politics.guardian.co.uk/foreignaffairs/comment/0,11538,1153053,00.html The Independent (UK) -- February 22, 2004 GUANTANAMO BRITONS LEFT IN LIMBO AS TALKS WITH US STALL By Severin Carrell http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=493906 February 22, 2004 BLUNKETT DEFIANT ON UK'S TERROR DETAINEES By Andy McSmith, Political Editor http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/politics/story.jsp?story=493905 February 20, 2004 'WE WANT ANSWERS: WHY HAVE THEY BEEN HELD SO LONG WITHOUT CHARGE?'
