Here is an interesting article... Der Spiegel -- August 12, 2005 WHAT AL-QAIDA REALLY WANTS By Yassin Musharbash http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,369448,00.html Note this part especially: "The First Phase Known as "the awakening" -- this has already been carried out and was supposed to have lasted from 2000 to 2003, or more precisely from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York and Washington to the fall of Baghdad in 2003. The aim of the attacks of 9/11 was to provoke the US into declaring war on the Islamic world and thereby "awakening" Muslims. "The first phase was judged by the strategists and masterminds behind al-Qaida as very successful," writes Hussein. "The battle field was opened up and the Americans and their allies became a closer and easier target." The terrorist network is also reported as being satisfied that its message can now be heard "everywhere."" Now I don't know if that was really their conscious intent or not, but when I heard about the attack while I was waiting to catch the BART train to work on 9/11, that was precisely my immdiate fear, because part of what I understood back in 1987 is that something like that would probably work -- especially if somebody like George W. Bush was sitting in the White House. And if their aim was really as stated by this story, I'm not at all sure it's really working out quite the way they wanted it to, but that's not much of a comfort, since it's actually working A LOT BETTER than that... It's just not what they had in mind -- and what they had in mind is the least of our worries: the United States has been spinning out of control ever since. Washington Post -- August 23, 2005 TERRORISM AS VIRUS By Paul Stares and Mona Yacoubian http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/22/AR2005082201109.html 5) THE WAR ON THE RULE OF LAW Duke University School of Law-- April 7-8, 2005 STRATEGIES FOR THE WAR ON TERRORISM: TAKING STOCK The Center on Law, Ethics and National Security http://www.law.duke.edu/lens/conferences/2005/ That page has links to video for six panel disccussions. Participants include John Altenburg, John Hutson, David Rivkin, and Louis Fisher. The fifth is of particular interest where Mr. Rivkin claims that the unlawful "military commissions" are a "military necessity" which is required to "de-legitimize" our enemies -- a statement which is utterly insane to whatever extent it isn't merely a fraud. And here's a couple of items by or about apoloogists...
